Kava for Safe, Natural Stress Relief

Kava Kava is a plant that is indigenous to the South Pacific and has been used by the people there for centuries. The native people use it in many different ways, including medicinally. One of the uses it has been getting widespread acclaim for throughout the world is for stress relief.

For the Pacific Island natives, the root plays a significant role in their society, not unlike alcohol in Western traditions. A drink is made from Kava Kava that is included in all types of ceremonies and celebrations. This drink is also used for relaxation at the end of the day. Kava does not have properties of addiction, nor does drinking it result in a hangover, much unlike alcohol.

The Kava Kava root is used as an herbal remedy for a variety of medical issues, including the often stress related symptoms of anxiety and insomnia. Studies have been conducted which show that it is indeed effective in relief of anxiety, as well as depression. It is also useful in improving the quality of sleep. One study in particular, which was double blind and placebo controlled, concluded that kava is effective for the reduction of both tension and anxiety.

Although more studies need to be done to provide further scientific proof, people use kava for almost every symptom that goes along with feeling stressed. It calms nerves, is a muscle relaxant and makes one generally feel more euphoric. Doctors and nutritionists alike are recommending kava for depression, anxiety and stress relief. Unlike many pharmaceutical drugs, you do not build up a dependence on kava.

Much has been made about the potential risk to liver health from taking kava, but this is still quite controversial. The supplement that raised the concerns initially was found to contain not only the root of the plant, as is correct, but the tops of the plant as well. This part is known to be toxic.

Other studies on hepatic toxicity have also been controversial. For example, in one case, the subjects in the study had a history of alcohol use and/or abuse. The kava that was administered in this study also included parts known to be toxic, rather than the root alone.

It has been observed that native users who use great quantities of kava can experience side effects. In most cases, the main symptom is a skin rash that is quite severe. However, the amount ingested must be quite large and over a long period of time. Once the kava was discontinued, the symptoms disappeared.

Although there does not appear any danger in using kava in normal doses, it is still always best to start a new supplement with a low dose and work up to more as needed if you have no unwanted reactions. Also, as with any supplement, if you are currently taking prescription medicines, it is a good idea to consult with your doctor to avoid and negative interactions.
